Vic: Crime stats down, but knife attacks rise

Victoria's crime rate has dropped four per cent over the past year, despite an alarmingrise in the number of knife attacks.

Chief Commissioner CHRISTINE NIXON says the latest figures show the largest reductionin reported crimes in eight years.

The crime figures compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show Victoria's crimerate is about 20 per cent below the national average.

Theft of motor vehicles dropped 12 per cent, residential burglaries fell eight percent and drug offences decreased 10 per cent, but assaults increased 13 per cent per 100,000people.

Police Minister ANDRE HAERMEYER says the government will introduce tougher laws inthe Spring session of Parliament giving police extra power to search for knifes, and makingit an offence to carry a knife unless the person has a legitimate excuse.
